Piano Isole Minori is an Italian domestic submarine cable system spanning approximately 830 kilometres. Entirely within Italy, it connects a large number of smaller islands and coastal communities to the national telecommunications network. The system serves an intra-Italian corridor, linking the Italian mainland with outlying island groups across the Tyrrhenian, Mediterranean, and Adriatic seas.
Piano Isole Minori has 30 landing points, all located in Italy. The system reaches communities across several distinct island groups and stretches of the Italian coastline.
In the Aeolian Islands, the cable lands at Alicudi Porto, Canneto (Lipari), Filicudi Porto, Lipari, Malfa (Salina), and Stromboli. The Egadi Islands are served by landings at Levanzo, Marettimo, and Marsala, with Trapani also included on the western Sicilian coast. Further Sicilian-area landings include Isola delle Femmine, Pantelleria, Ustica, Linosa, and Lampedusa, the latter two forming part of the Pelagie Islands.
In Sardinia and nearby islands, the cable reaches Cala d'Oliva (Asinara), Carloforte (San Pietro Island), Portoscuso, and Stintino on the Sardinian mainland coast. The Tuscan Archipelago is served by landings at Capraia Isola and Portoferraio (Elba).
The Tremiti Islands in the Adriatic are connected via San Domino, San Nicola di Tremiti, and Ditella. The Pontine Islands are served by Ponza, Santo Stefano, and Ventotene. Mainland coastal landing points include Gaeta, Patti, and Torre Mileto.
Piano Isole Minori is owned by Infratel Italia, a public company operating under Italy's Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy. Infratel Italia is responsible for extending broadband and telecommunications infrastructure to underserved areas of Italy, making this system consistent with its broader national connectivity mandate.
The cable reached ready-for-service status in 2024, making it one of the more recently activated submarine systems in Italian waters.
Unlike most submarine cables touching Italian shores — such as 2Africa, AAE-1, IMEWE, or the Gulf Bridge International system — which are long-haul international systems crossing thousands of kilometres, Piano Isole Minori is entirely domestic in scope. At 830 kilometres, it is considerably shorter than regional peers such as the MedNautilus Submarine System or the forthcoming Medusa Submarine Cable System, reflecting its purpose as an island-connectivity project rather than an intercontinental or interregional link.
Piano Isole Minori addresses telecommunications access for populations on Italy's smaller islands and remote coastal communities, many of which have historically had limited fixed broadband connectivity. With 30 landing points spread across the Aeolian, Egadi, Pelagie, Pontine, and Tremiti island groups, as well as Sardinian and Tuscan archipelago locations, the system extends terrestrial-equivalent connectivity to communities that would otherwise depend solely on satellite or microwave links.
