Mercator is a short-haul submarine cable system connecting Belgium and the United Kingdom across the southern North Sea. Owned and operated by BT, it serves the cross-Channel corridor between the two countries. The cable entered service in 2023 and has been operational for approximately three years.
In Belgium, Mercator lands at Ostend, a coastal city on the North Sea shore. In the United Kingdom, the cable comes ashore at Broadstairs, located on the Kent coast in southeast England. These two landing points define a direct cross-Channel connection.
Mercator is solely owned by BT, the British telecommunications company. As the single owner, BT is responsible for both the operation and maintenance of the cable system.
Mercator became ready for service in 2023, making it one of the more recently commissioned cables in this corridor. It is currently in service.
The cross-Channel and broader UK submarine cable environment is well established, with 42 cables landing across 105 points in the United Kingdom alone. Belgium, by contrast, hosts a smaller cable infrastructure, with three submarine cables landing across two landing points. Mercator is a short domestic-corridor system rather than a long-haul intercontinental cable; regional peers landing in the United Kingdom — such as 2Africa, Europe India Gateway, and Apollo — operate over distances ranging from several thousand to tens of thousands of kilometres, placing Mercator in a distinct, shorter-range category.
Measured performance over the past 60 days, based on 75 ping tests, shows an average round-trip latency of 34.3 ms, with a best recorded value of 21.7 ms. These figures reflect the relatively modest geographic distance between Ostend and Broadstairs.
Mercator provides a direct submarine link between Belgium and the United Kingdom, supporting connectivity between two closely situated but internationally significant network hubs. Its landing at Broadstairs places it among a well-served cluster of cable stations on the Kent coast, while its Ostend landing connects to Belgium's limited but established submarine cable infrastructure. As a BT-owned asset, it complements the company's broader network presence in the UK–continental Europe corridor.
