Geometry of the Location: Depths, Shores, Shipping

Isla Verde, located at latitude 18.5000 and longitude -66.0000, serves as a key node for submarine cables in the Caribbean region. Geographically, this location is a coastal area of Puerto Rico where complex marine topography and limited options for cable laying force operators to concentrate routes within a narrow corridor. Deep-sea sections of the Atlantic Ocean transition into relatively shallow coastal waters, making the construction of alternative routes technically challenging and costly. The shores of Puerto Rico are also densely developed, limiting the choice of landing points for cables. Additionally, the region's intense shipping activity requires meticulous route planning to avoid cable damage from anchors and trawls.

What’s Packed In: Main Routes and Their Scale

Thirteen submarine cables pass through Isla Verde, connecting North and South America as well as Caribbean nations. Among them are major routes such as South America-1 (SAm-1), spanning 25,000 km, BRUSA (11,000 km), and ARCOS (8,704 km), which provide connectivity between the United States, Brazil, Panama, Colombia and other countries. Shorter but equally significant routes include GTMO-PR (1,400 km) and Taino-Carib (187 km), linking Puerto Rico with neighboring islands. These cables support not only internet services but also critical infrastructure for financial, medical and governmental systems in numerous countries, including the United States, Brazil, the Dominican Republic and Mexico.

Alternative Corridors: Why They Don’t Help

Theoretically, alternative routes for laying cables exist, such as through the eastern Caribbean Sea or along the Central American coastline. However, these options face several challenges. First, increasing the cable length, as in the case of bypassing through eastern waters, leads to higher construction and operational costs. For example, extending a route by 1,000 km could inflate the project budget by tens of millions of dollars. Second, alternative corridors have their own vulnerabilities. Eastern routes are exposed to risks from tropical storms and hurricanes, while western routes face high seismic activity along the Central American coast. Thus, the region's geography effectively compels operators to concentrate cables within the narrow Isla Verde zone.

Break Scenario Step by Step

In the event of a break in one or more cables in the Isla Verde area, the consequences would be felt immediately. In the first few hours, traffic routes would be redirected through backup cables, increasing latency (RTT). For instance, communication between the United States and Brazil might be rerouted via longer paths, such as through Europe, adding tens of milliseconds to response times. Within the first 24 hours, operators would begin assessing the damage and devising a repair plan. If the break affects major cables like SAm-1 or BRUSA, restoration could take weeks due to their length and complexity. During this time, countries such as Puerto Rico, Brazil and the Dominican Republic would face challenges in accessing international resources, including cloud services and financial systems.

Continuous monitoring minimizes risks and ensures swift responses to any incidents, which is especially critical in a narrow and congested corridor like Isla Verde.
