At 06:20 local time on August 16, 2026, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck off the coast of Vanuatu. The epicenter was situated approximately 56 km northeast of Port Olry at a shallow depth of about 10 km. This region lies within the Pacific Ocean's Ring of Fire, a highly active tectonic zone known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The seismic activity in this area is driven by the complex interactions between the Pacific Plate and the Indo-Australian Plate, which converge and create significant geological stress. Despite the considerable force of the earthquake, there have been no reports of serious infrastructure damage or disruptions to daily life in the affected areas.

Cables in the Earthquake Zone

Two critical submarine cables are located within the vicinity of the earthquake's epicenter: the Tamtam cable and the Interchange Cable Network 1 (ICN1). The Tamtam cable, spanning 411 km, serves as a vital communication link for Vanuatu and passes through Luganville, approximately 106.6 km from the epicenter. Owned by Prima and operational since 2027, this cable is integral to regional connectivity, supporting both domestic and international communication needs.

Meanwhile, the ICN1 cable, managed by Interchange, is a longer system measuring 1259 km and connects Port Vila, Vanuatu's capital, which is located 373.9 km from the epicenter. Operational since 2014, ICN1 is a cornerstone of Vanuatu's international connectivity, linking the island nation to global networks. Both cables are strategically designed to withstand environmental challenges, including seismic activity, which is crucial given the region's tectonic volatility.

Round-trip time (RTT) measurements for these cables showed no anomalies, with Tamtam maintaining an average RTT of approximately 45 ms and ICN1 averaging around 65 ms. No increases in latency or packet loss were detected, affirming the robustness of these submarine systems against seismic disturbances. This performance underscores the reliability of modern cable infrastructure in maintaining uninterrupted communication, even under challenging conditions.
