Natitua Sud is an intra-French Polynesia submarine cable system spanning 820 kilometres. It connects three landing points entirely within French Polynesia, serving the domestic connectivity needs of the territory's dispersed island communities. The cable became ready for service in 2023 and is operated by OPT French Polynesia.
All three landing points are located within French Polynesia. The cable reaches Hitia'a on the island of Tahiti in the Society Islands, along with Rurutu and Tubuai, both situated in the Austral Islands group to the south. No laying order is implied by these landings; together they form a network linking the Society Islands to the more remote Austral Islands.
Natitua Sud is wholly owned and operated by OPT French Polynesia (Office des Postes et Télécommunications de Polynésie française), the territory's public telecommunications operator. As the state telecommunications provider for French Polynesia, OPT has been the principal entity responsible for developing submarine cable infrastructure across the territory's widely dispersed island groups.
Natitua Sud entered service in 2023 and has been operational for approximately three years. No end-of-service date is recorded at this time.
French Polynesia is served by seven submarine cables landing across 21 points throughout the territory, reflecting the significant connectivity demands of a geographically scattered archipelago. At 820 kilometres, Natitua Sud is the shortest cable among the systems currently serving French Polynesia — it is shorter than all six regional peers recorded in the same corridor. These peers include Honotua (4,805 km, RFS 2010), Manatua (3,634 km, RFS 2020), Natitua (2,680 km, RFS 2018), and several longer systems planned for service in 2026 and 2027, including Honomoana, Bulikula, and Halaihai. Natitua Sud's comparatively short length reflects its specific function as a domestic inter-island link rather than a long-haul or international route.
Its closest namesake, Natitua (RFS 2018), was also developed by OPT French Polynesia to extend cable connectivity to northern island groups. Natitua Sud extends that approach to the Austral Islands in the south.
By connecting the Austral Islands communities of Rurutu and Tubuai to Hitia'a on Tahiti, Natitua Sud extends terrestrial-quality broadband connectivity to island communities that are among the most geographically isolated in French Polynesia. The cable complements the broader network of domestic and international systems that together serve the territory's 21 submarine cable landing points, helping to reduce the connectivity gap between Tahiti and the outer islands of the Austral archipelago.
